Description
Official Oklahoma State Flag 1925 ; Present (Nylon)The State Legislature adopted this Oklahoma State Flag design on April 2nd, 1925, and pays tribute to over sixty different Native American groups. The artwork consists of a buffalo skin shield that was used by the Osage warriors and seven eagle feathers against a blue sky background. Eagle feathers are considered to be of sacred significance to the Native American people and there are seven spiritual meanings for eagle feathers (prosperity, courage, victory, strong connection with the spirits, wisdom, reward, and determination) hence the seven feathers depicted on the flag. The blue background honors the Choctaw soldiers who carried similarly colored flags during the Civil War. Two symbols of peace, a calumet (peace pipe), and an olive branch are shown crossed in front of the shield, while six golden brown crosses are spaced in two lines across the shield, which is the Native American symbol for stars thus representing high morals. The flag design was derived from a contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in 1924. Louise Fluke was the winner of the contest. Her flag design was very much like the one still being used today except for the word ;Oklahoma; and a few minor color changes. ;Oklahoma; was added in 1941 and two minor changes to the color shades of the details as well as the background were made in 1988 and 2006. Other than that, the artwork is the same as it was since being adopted in 1925. The Oklahoma state flag is one of only two flags to use Native American iconography, the other being New Mexico, however, Minnesota and Massachusetts flags contain depictions of native people.Oklahoma State Flag Pledge;I salute the flag of the State of Oklahoma.
