Official Mississippi State Flag 1894 ; 2020 (Nylon)The Mississippi state legislature adopted this state flag design on February 7th, 1894 and it served as the state flag until 2020 when it was replaced by the current flag. The Magnolia Flag which had served officially as the state flag during the civil war years 1861 ; 1865 was Mississippi;s first official flag. The Magnolia flag, however, was nullified by a state constitutional convention that was assembled after the end of the civil war. Mississippi had no official state flag prior to 1861 or during the time after the Magnolia flag was nullified in 1865 until 1894 when this design was adopted. Created by Edward N. Scudder, the flag consisted of three equal horizontal bars of blue, white, and red. It also included the likeness of the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia in its canton (upper hoist-end corner). The 13 stars on the state flag officially represented the original thirteen states of the United States.
